A SOUNDSCAPE FOR CHURCH GATE
A Soundscape for Church Gate is an atmospheric audio experience that charts the story of this historic street from the 15th Century through to the present day. Come along and discover its unique heritage from the boxers who would skip along its street to the elephants that would pound its path. A Soundscape for Church Gate shines a light on this iconic street, as it embarks on its new path, as once again Church Gate begins to mutate.
Funded by the National Heritage Lottery Fund Whispered Tales researched the history of Sound System culture in the East Midlands from 1950 through to the present day. The project enabled Whispered Tales to work with young people who learnt new skills in oral archiving and collated interviews with members from the Sound System community. The research was displayed in an eye catching exhibition based on a sound system speaker stack that toured to 14 locations across the UK in 2020 and 2021 reaching over 12,000 people.
Whispered Tales was commissioned by Leicester City Council to develop two Well Being sound based experiences for Abbey Pumping Station and Leicester Museum and Art Gallery. Whispered Tales delivered a number of workshops to a range of
community groups to ensure that the project took into account a wide variety of user groups. The end result was a permanent outdoor sound experience at Abbey Pumping Station and an indoor sound experience at Leicester Museum and Art Gallery.
