SANCTUARY LIGHT NIGHT INSTALLATION
Sanctuary is a visually stunning and emotive installation. The public will stumble across a sheer white cliff, on top of the cliff is an illuminated refuge bollard. Perched on top of the bollard is an illuminated dove looking out across the sea. The illuminated artwork shares stories of female migration and the human capacity to offer a place of refuge in times of crisis.
Sanctuary contains a mesmerising soundtrack of rippling waves and whispered voices. As the public wonder up to the installation they hear a soundtrack that contains several voices, sharing an insight as to why they were forced to leave their home. Countries are purposely not named to emphasis the human story.
Commissioned by BD is Lit with financial support from Arts Council England. The dove was created by The lantern Company for the Eurovision launch in 2023. A Place of Refuge premiered at BD is Lit in 2023 and is available to tour in 2024
PARTICIPATION
Whispered Tales can facilitate an oral archiving project where we interview members of your community who have been affected by war and have sought refuge in the UK. These interviews can then be part of the soundtrack.
Whispered Tales can also offer a participation program where members of the community create the sea that surround the cliff. This is a crafting participation program that does not require a high level of skill and that all members of the community can take part in.
LOCATIONS
The installation can be placed outdoors, ideally in an area that offers space for the public to reflect, such as a courtyard. The installation can also be exhibited indoors, spaces that would work well include: libraries, museum foyers, theatre foyers and places of worship.
