DISTANT DRUMS
In 2020 we received a grant from National Lottery Heritage to research and share the story of sound system culture. Written and researched by Madu Messenger, narrated by the reggae legend Macka B, Distant Drums shares the the story of Reggae Sound System culture and its role in the fight for equality. The digital art installation can be presented at festivals, galleries and light nights. Whispered Tales have plans to transform the installation into an outdoor performance for 2021.
RELEASE
Release is an Arts Council England funded project that shares stories of migration where music has offered a moment of release, created in partnership with Mahboobeh Rajabi an Iranian digital artist. Esther and Mahboobeh ran a series of workshops with writers and asylum seekers offering training and peer support on the creation of podcasts. Originally an immersive headphone trail, due to Covid Release was transformed into a short film telling the story of an Irish migrant and a Bosnian refugee.
LIVERPOOL MET CATHEDRAL
Whispered Tales is currently working with the Metropolitan Cathedral Team to run a volunteer participation program to develop three new visitor attractions for this iconic place of worship. The resulting Heritage Lottery Funded work will see Whispered Tales create an exhibition for Lutyens Crypt, an audio tour and a family trail.
TWISTED TALES
The Twisted Tales Series is a partnership with Open Theatre Company and Birmingham Hippodrome that supports learning disabled artists. Esther Simpson is the Artistic Director of Twisted Tales, working with the artists to devise and direct a family theatre show based on a classic fairy tale. In 2020 The Twisted Tale of Hansel and Gretel premiered at Birmingham Hippodrome and went on a national tour to: Hull Truck, Arts Depot, Cambridge Junction.
TOWER OF LONDON
In 2019 we were asked to develop some immersive audio ideas by the Historic Royal Palaces team. Whispered Tales sought to create an after hours immersive audio Tour that shared the heart breaking story of Katherine of Aragon for an intimate and atmospheric experiences away from the day time crowds.
